Frequently asked questions about the enhanced ACT

How long is the ACT?

The English, math, and reading sections take 2 hours and 5 minutes, excluding transitions and breaks. Science adds 40 minutes, and writing adds another 40 minutes. Your total time at the test center will be longer than the timed sections. Check your registration for your selected options.

Is science required, and does it affect the Composite score?

Science is optional for national ACT testing. The Composite uses English, math, and reading; science does not count toward it. Math and science contribute to the STEM score. Before selecting your test options, check whether your target colleges or programs require or recommend science or writing.

Is the online ACT adaptive?

No. The ACT remains a linear test, not an adaptive exam. National testing offers paper and online options. Choose an available format during registration and practice using materials that reflect that experience. Online testing takes place at a testing site, not remotely from home.

How should my student prepare for the current format?

Use current official ACT practice materials and practice each section with its published time limit. Review missed questions to identify which skills need attention, then build pacing practice into the study plan. The House can help you discuss preparation options around your student’s goals and schedule.

How does ACT superscoring work?

ACT’s current Superscore Composite uses English, math, and reading. Your highest subject scores may come from different test events, including older and enhanced administrations. Existing scores are not automatically recalculated. Check ACT’s official superscore guidance and each college’s policy before deciding which scores to submit.

Where can I check dates and register?

Use ACT’s official registration page to review current dates, deadlines, test centers, and available formats. Register through MyACT. For school-day testing, ask your school about its arrangements. To discuss tutoring or a practice test, contact The House.
