Why Rising Sophomores Should Start ACT or SAT Prep This Summer

If you’re already thinking about how busy next year will be, you’re not alone.

Most families wait—and end up trying to fit test prep into an already packed schedule.

Summer gives students something they won’t have later: time and focus.

  • A clear window to build skills
  • No daily school workload competing for attention
  • The opportunity to complete testing before schedules fill up
  • More flexibility to take multiple test dates without pressure

This is when students can make the most progress.

The goal isn’t just a higher score—it’s a better plan.

Is This a Good Fit?

You might be wondering if this summer is the right time—that’s exactly what we help you figure out.

Most students are ready to begin once they’ve completed geometry.

The ACT and SAT are based on core algebra and geometry. Students don’t need advanced math to begin—and anything they haven’t seen yet is covered in prep.

This is a strong fit if your student:

  • Has performed well on the PreACT
  • Has completed geometry
  • Wants to use summer to get ahead
  • Will have a busy school year
  • Benefits from structure and expert, personalized guidance.

Perfect ACT

What It Looks Like to Finish Early

This is a path many families don’t realize is possible.

One rising sophomore came to The House after getting a strong PSAT score at New Trier. His parents wanted to see if it was possible to get testing out of the way early.

Summer Start

He began prep over the summer and took his first ACT in October.

Steady Progress

He took a second test in December while the material was still fresh, followed by a more targeted round of prep leading into February. By February, he had reached a 35 superscore.

Final Push

He decided to go for one more attempt—this time aiming for a perfect composite score without superscoring. He earned a 36.

Only 2,958 out of 1.38 million students reach that level.

Junior Year Focus

Now in junior year, his focus is entirely on AP classes, his junior theme, and keeping up with school—without test prep in the background.
