Understanding the SSAT
The Secondary School Admission Test is used by many independent and private schools. Your student’s grade determines the appropriate level:
- Elementary: grades 3–4
- Middle: grades 5–7
- Upper: grades 8–11
The SSAT includes verbal, quantitative, and reading sections, plus an unscored writing sample. Scores are reported on scales that vary by level and include percentile comparisons. Check your target schools’ testing policies and deadlines.
Testing formats, registration dates, retake rules, and accommodation requirements vary. Check current official SSAT details.
