About this Step
Once you’ve decided which test you’ll be taking, your next step is to decide on a test date. There are always rumors floating around that one exam date or another is “easier,” and, while this isn’t true, there are advantages to selecting a date that fits neatly into your academic, athletic, and social calendar. There are several factors to consider when choosing a date, including what level of math you’ve completed, the seasonal rhythm of your schoolwork, and your summer plans.

How do I decide the best time to take the ACT or SAT?
Choose a time when you know you won’t be busy with other pressing responsibilities (finals, playoffs, holidays, etc), so you can give the exam your full attention. Ideally, you should give yourself at least ten to twelve weeks to prepare, making sure that you’ll have enough time to receive and report your scores before your applications are due.
I will be an Incoming Junior, why is preparing over the summer a good time for test prep?
Summer is a great time to knock out your test prep! Things can get hectic during the school year, and summer prep allows you to focus on the exam without those day-to-day pressures while balancing extracurriculars. Plus, you’ll ensure that your skills stay sharp over the break.
I know my school gives me a free SAT; shouldn’t I just take that instead of preparing for the ACT when I know I take the SAT regardless?
If, upon reflection, it seems that you’d do equally well on both tests, this might be a good option. However, the most important thing is putting your best academic foot forward with colleges, so it is most likely more advantageous to take the test you’re best suited to.
