Set The Stage Workshop Series

 
Writers Theatre and The House Tutoring Lounge team up to offer TEENS a six-part overview of the world of theatre as an art and a craft. Professional guest artists will lead sessions covering a wide-range of topics including design, performance, writing, stage combat, and art in community.

Set the Stage: A hands-on workshop series for teens exploring all things theatre

WORKSHOP #1: THEATRE IN COMMUNITY  

Saturday, November 12th, 10am-12:20pm

Theatre is not just entertainment; it can also be used as a tool of healing and self-expression. In the first workshop of our introductory series, we’ll explore the nature and origins of the art of storytelling. Participants will create short pieces of writing and/or performance responding to events in their lives and community. This workshop will take place at The House Tutoring Lounge Highland Park.

WORKSHOP #2: PLAYWRITING & ADAPTATION  

Saturday, December 3rd, 10am-12:20pm

Great art exists in conversation with the creative world around it. In this workshop, participants will explore the process of adapting a variety of source materials for the stage. These will include personal writing, literature, visual art, poetry, and more. This workshop will take place at The House Tutoring Lounge Highland Park.

WORKSHOP #3: ACTING  

Saturday, January 28th, 10am-12:20pm 
The House Tutoring Lounge in Highland Park (615 Central Ave, Highland Park, IL 60035)

This workshop will introduce basic methodologies of acting for the stage and focus on character analysis and development and physical and vocal expression. Pulling from the contemporary canon, participants will investigate character through monologues and scenework. This workshop will take place at The House Tutoring Lounge Highland Park.

WORKSHOP #4: THEATRE DESIGN 

Saturday, February 25th, 10am-12:20pm 
Writers Theatre (325 Tudor Ct, Glencoe, IL 60022)

Theatre is a multi-sensory art. In this workshop, participants will learn about the core tenets of design for theatre with a focus on storytelling through scenic and costume design. They will engage in a hands-on design project in a medium of their choice. This workshop will take place at Writers Theatre.

WORKSHOP #5: SHAKESPEARE & STAGE COMBAT 

Saturday, March 18th, 10am-12:20pm 
Writers Theatre (325 Tudor Ct, Glencoe, IL 60022) 

I have no words. My voice is in my sword!” –William Shakespeare’s MacBeth 

Participants will dive into the world of heightened language and heightened emotions. The first half of the day will focus on diving deep into Shakespeare’s text from the perspective of an actor. The second half will teach basic stage combat and a short fight sequence paired with a scene from Shakespeare. This workshop will take place at Writers Theatre.

WORKSHOP #6: GLOBAL THEATRE  

Saturday, April 15th, 10am-12:20pm

In this workshop, participants will explore theatrical and storytelling traditions from non-Western cultures, with an emphasis on the previously investigated topics of text, performance, and design. This workshop will take place at Writers Theatre.
